Ethiopia expects to start producing and exporting petroleum and natural gas after three years in 2020 says Ministry of Mine, Petroleum and Natural gas.

Bacha Faji Public Relation and Communication Director at Ministry of Mine, Petroleum and Natural gas told The Ethiopian Herald that currently five foreign companies are exploring petroleum and natural gas in Eastern Ethiopia; Ogaden area, Tigray, Rift valley of Ethiopia, Abay valley and southern Omo basin areas.“The rock, soil and water studies show that existence of natural gas reserves in several places, and through process it will be changed in to product.”

The five foreign companies have already acquired licenses to explore petroleum and natural gas throughout the country, the vast majority of reserves being in the South Eastern Somali Region called Calub and Hilala. Prior studies on the fields indicate the existence of more than 4 trillion cubic feet of natural gas.According to the communication director the country expects to begin producing and exporting natural gas from the area after three years.

He indicated that so far the prospect for natural gas in Ethiopia is found in Caluba and Hilala areas of the Ogaden. The Chinese company POLY-GCL Petroleum is carrying out activities on the Calub and Hilala reserves to produce and develop natural gas in the next three years. The company is performing the construction of pipeline fields stretching to transport gas from Ethiopian to Djibouti.
